Ready...Set..Clutch!
There's nothing like a great clutch! They are the perfect size for a night on the town or a day trip to window shop! Us ladies tend to carry an excessive amount of "stuff", so it's nice to unload a bit and have a cute lil' bag for our necessities!
Apparently all of the clutches I made for my bridesmaids were quite the hit, so here is a simplified "how to" make a clutch! The best part of this "how to" is that these adorable clutches are made out of... placemats!
To start, pick your placemat! Placemats work great because they are thick and sturdy, plus you can find them in a variety of patterns & colors! I have had great luck at Home Goods, TJ Max, World Market & Pier One.
Materials:
Placemat
Sewing machine or a very good hand stitch
Ribbon or Small piece of fabric (to cover the piece of plastic canvas in the bottom)
Plastic Canvas (found near the thread/yarn sections in craft stores)
Velcro or snaps (Something to use for keeping the clutch closed)
Decorative accent (to put over the button or snap)
You are going to take the bottom of the opening on the bottom and put the middle up to where you just sewed. See picture. Sew each corner, stopping at the center. This will create the box corners.
Then turn your clutch inside out, putting the pattern that you originally selected on the outside
Measure the base of your clutch in width and length and cut a piece of plastic canvas about a 1/2" smaller. Plastic canvas: available in craft stores near needlework/thread/yarn stuff.

Lay your placemat out play with how you want your final fold to be.
You will need to sew your placemat inside out. Sew up the seam, but leave 1.5"opening at the bottom. (If you want a wider base to your clutch, leave a larger opening)

Now it's time to create the base of your clutch, this will keep your clutch upright.
Measure the base of your clutch in width and length and cut a piece of plastic canvas about a 1/2" smaller. Plastic canvas: available in craft stores near needlework/thread/yarn stuff.
Cut a piece of felt or fabric that is bigger than the piece of plastic canvas you just cut. You are going to fold it and then glue the seam.
Now it is time to add the buttons or snaps- See instructions found on the button or snap packaging. I used one of my sewing tools to punch the holes for the snaps.
Lastly, add your decorative accent to cover the snap or button. I used this fun starfish pin. For the bridesmaids clutches I made a special knot that I found online and hot glued it on!
Ta Da! Now you have yourself a fabulous clutch!!!
